Hello and welcome to my bi-weekly column, where I will discuss issues related to
college admissions. As needed, I will focus on a pressing issue or news surrounding
admissions. Other times, I will discuss my experiences teaching middle school and high
school students, offering parents tips for successfully navigating teenhood.
I was born in the U.S. and have spent most of my life in Atlanta, GA. I graduated from
Emory University and upon finishing my undergraduate degree in English Literature, I
found a job as an English teacher at a prestigious hakwon based in Seoul, Korea.
Although I had tutored many students privately and at multiple hakwons across North
Atlanta, the challenges of connecting with students who do not primarily speak English
helped me develop patience and endurance, two things teachers need. I also translated
documents and eventually scripts for Arirang TV/Radio, which led to me auditioning for
the radio department as a news anchor. Four magical years in the broadcasting
business helped me form agility, quick processing, and a command of public speaking
and presentation. I then returned to Atlanta in 2015 and have worked in hakwons and
as a college consultant.
The reason I am sharing my background is to introduce that I am bi-cultural and bi-
lingual, aspects of myself that give me a unique perspective on education. Working both
in the U.S. and Korea in the education field has helped me appreciate the various
similarities and differences between the two systems, but also has led me to try to
combine the best of both worlds to shape my views and apply them to teaching my
students.
I am thrilled to contribute to this blog, with my primary focus on being informative and
insightful, helping parents and students through one of the most stressful and
challenging periods of students’ lives: the college admissions process. If I can help
erase any worries, leading students to be more confident, while equipping them with
useful tips, then I will continue this column a rousing success!
